The President’s Office, London, 13 January 2266, 23:05 hours

“Well that didn’t take long”, President Kartess remarked when the holographic image of Admiral Zhang materialized in her office.

Zhang himself was still on SOL-13, where he was supervising the construction of the next Interlink class vessel. He was seated on a holo-chair at the space station, which transmitted his neural waves by phase-coms to a body comprised of photons in the presidential suite.

“These meetings can be quite productive from time to time”, he replied to the tall woman with strawberry blond hair.

With every step she took, President Kartess exuded an aura of elegance. Her fashionable attire and delicate physique lent her a vulnerability that frequently caused rivals to underestimate her. It was a mistake that few had the opportunity to repeat.

“Well then Yoshio, what do you suggest we do? What has the Admiralty decided?”

He had of course already sent word to the President during the meeting.

“Seven to five in favor of intervening. I have prepared a message for Commander Ishida. With your permission I will order its immediate transmission.”

“You have my permission”, the President replied. Leaning back in her chair, she picked up a porcelain cup and saucer from the table – its value no doubt far exceeded Yoshio’s salary – and sipped at her tea. “I put the ministers for foreign affairs and defense in the picture while the Admiralty convened. They are both preparing contingency plans for a range of scenarios that will enable us to respond quickly if the crisis deepens. The other cabinet ministers are unaware of events and I hope to keep them in the dark for some time yet. The last thing I want is another extraordinary cabinet meeting.
